Psychological well-being

Understanding the human side of skin conditions

Living with a skin condition is about much more than managing physical symptoms. For many people, the visible nature of these diseases can affect confidence, social interactions, and overall emotional balance

Families, too, often face their own concerns while supporting a loved one. At Almirall, we believe that truly improving patients’ lives means acknowledging and addressing these psychological dimensions, not only the clinical aspects.

Our commitment begins with listening to the experiences of individuals and families, so that the challenges they face are recognized and understood.

Why psychological well-being matters

Skin conditions such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and vitiligo can carry a stigma that impacts day-to-day life

People may avoid social situations, feel anxious about being judged, or struggle with a sense of isolation. These emotional responses are not secondary; they are a fundamental part of the patient experience

Families may also feel the strain, adapting daily routines or offering continuous emotional support. At Almirall, we see psychological well-being as an essential dimension of care

By highlighting its importance, we hope to encourage more open conversations and empower people to seek the support they deserve.

Leading research into emotional impact

Almirall takes the lead in introducing questionnaires in a consistent manner to measure and study the psychological burden of skin diseases in both patients and their families.

Our research began with a focus on psoriasis and is now expanding to include other skin conditions. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the emotional and psychological impact across a range of dermatological diseases.

We explore how these conditions influence self-esteem, quality of life, relationships, and mental health. Through partnerships with experts in dermatology, psychology, and patient advocacy, we are building a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced by this community. These insights allow us to design more responsive solutions—solutions that consider people as whole individuals, not just symptoms to be treated.

A commitment that extends beyond treatment

Our mission goes further than developing effective therapies

We aim to support the emotional and social well-being of those affected, helping them feel seen, heard, and valued. This commitment is reflected in our patient-centred initiatives, educational resources, and collaborative projects with healthcare professionals.

By integrating psychological understanding into everything we do, we strive to create a more compassionate approach to dermatology—one where patients and families feel confident, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Working together for better lives

Psychological well-being is a shared responsibility

By bringing together scientific research, clinical expertise, and genuine empathy, Almirall aims to improve the lives of people living with skin conditions in meaningful, lasting ways.

We will continue to raise awareness of the emotional impact of dermatological diseases and champion a more holistic view of care.

Because when we address both the seen and the unseen effects of skin conditions, we take an important step towards helping people live fuller, more confident lives.
