Almirall, pioneer in Spain by being awarded the ISO 50001:2011 energy management system certification
- Only some pharmaceutical laboratories hold this international recognition

Barcelona, 19th June 2013.-Almirall has successfully passed the initial audit for the ISO 50001:2011 certification performed by TÜV Rheinland on its work centres in Spain. This makes it one of the first pharmaceutical laboratories to obtain this internationally recognized certification.
This energy management system, implanted according to ISO 50001:2011, is a tool for Almirall to improve energy efficiency systematically, increasing the use of renewable energies and energy saving as well as reducing greenhouse effect gas emissions.
The scope of this certificate covers research and development activities, manufacturing of active ingredients and manufacturing and wholesale trading of pharmaceutical products.
Commitment to energy efficiency
In 2012 Almirall cut its greenhouse effect gas emissions arising from energy consumption in its R&D and production centres in Spain by 3%, with a notable reduction in the Sant Feliu R&D centre of 7%.
Furthermore, improvement activities implanted in this period have enabled significant energy savings: a reduction of 11% in the Sant Andreu pharmaceutical plant; 6% in the chemical plants in Sant Andreu and Sant Celoni; and 6% in the Sant Feliu R&D centre and a saving of 2% in the Barcelona headquarters.
Under a single unified policy, in 2012 Almirall has integrated the new corporate energy management system (ISO 50001:2011) into the environment management system (ISO 14001:2004) and the occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS 18001:2007).
ISO 50001:2011
The new international standard ISO 50001:2011, published in June 2011, specifies the requirements for an Energy Management System that enables a company to have a methodical focus in order to achieve continuous improvement in its energy performance, including energy efficiency and the use and consumption of energy.
TÜV Rheinland is a leading international group in inspection, environmental protection, certification of product management, safety and quality systems which was created in 1872 in Cologne, Germany. Renewal of this certificate by Almirall is valid for a period of three years. During this period annual follow-up audits will be performed.
