Acne types
Fulminant acne
It is an acute condition characterized by nodules or friable plaques, erosions and ulcers.
Acne excoriée
It usually occurs with relatively mild comedones or inflammatory papules leading to erosions and scars. It occurs more commonly in young women.
Infantile acne
It usually starts between the ages of three and six months and occurs due to the presence of high levels of androgens produced by the immature adrenal gland in girls, and the immature adrenal gland and testicles in boys. Androgen levels decrease between one and two years of age, which leads to an improvement in acne.
Acne conglobata
Acne conglobata is a severe form of nodular acne that occurs more commonly in young males. It usually occurs in the back, chest and buttocks, but can also appear in the face and other areas. It is characterized by large, draining lesions, sinus tracts and severe scars.
